Sports + 27th June 2023 - this week the Squid Squad 24hour Open water Relay Swim in Swanage Bay

Sports presenter Rena Lang talks to Dan Chambers on the opening water challenge here in Swanage Bay. The 4 man team, Dan Chambers, Darren Tomes, Oliver Jones and Paul Green have together become the Squid Squad. They have been practising every day for the open water relay challenge which starts at 6 pm on Friday 21st July 2023. The reason they all came together and have been training nonstop as Dan explains they are doing this for two very worthy charities Dorset Mind and RNLI. We wish them all the very best on this gruelling challenge and don’t forget to come along and cheer them on.

Coastal Ways Special - The Princess Royale Visit To NCI Volunteers

The Princess Royal, Princess Anne, was in Swanage back in June 2021 visiting volunteer coastwatchers from the National Coastwatch Institution. Her Royal Highness, who is their patron, was flown in by helicopter to call in at watchtowers at St Albans Head, and Peveril Point. It was then off to Durlston Castle for an official reception, and to present long service awards. In a speech to an assembled audience of over fifty volunteers, she paid tribute to their work and dedication. Our Coastal Ways reporter, Ian Harkness was there.

More now on this week’s Swanage Town Council meeting in which there was much discussion about  Swanage’s threatened ambulance car.  The Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group is denying an unconfirmed report that the decision has already been taken to scrap it. Town councillor  Debbie Monkhouse was at the meeting and proposed a key motion. She's been telling our Coastal Ways reporter, Ian Harkness, what happened in the council chamber on Monday 15th March 2021.

Purbeck Coast FM's 'Coastal Ways' - Bin the Beast

Environmental campaigners have expressed alarm at the number of used blue plastic disposable gloves discarded  outside parks and supermarkets. The group, Litter Free Dorset, says that they not only pollute the countryside, they could also carry a risk of infection with the Coronavirus. They’ve started a campaign called “Bin The Beast” to encourage people to dispose of them properly.  Sophie Colley , their spokeswoman, spoke to our reporter Ian Harkness back in June 2020.
